Quick book and chat thoughts…

The Anti- Racist Social Work Edited by Tanya Moore and Glory Simango

What an insightful read!!!

As a first year I have sat in a few lesson now on diversity, representative voices, inclusion, equally, decolonisation of social work, and other relating topics. Though none of which have really clued me in on the direct changes the profession is making in the name of progress and social justice – own learning being heavily prompted.

This book and it’s many contributors gave a newbie like me a great look into how ‘clumsy’ conversation can happen, and how willing and authenticity from those that have the power to push the change is vital. But also how social work is initiating change with such work as WRES (Workforce, Race, Equality, Standard), mentoring, and link with other health practices such as Occupational Therapist – thoughts all strengthen in our bookclub chat talking of the nuances of conversation and the benefit of being an ally, which is unmeasurable for all involved.

Also, each chapter ends on three reflective points, ideal if you are journaling as a part of studying, or as a part of practice. Get a lot of paper because those prompts are great, challenging, while also motivating, asking the reader to not only think on their work place, but life position also, their own race, privileges, and any preconceived ideas worth confronting.

And, like any good book club, other reading recommendations where made around the subject, which where –

Against White Feminism by Rasfia Zakaria

The Righteous Mind from Jonathan Haidt

How To Be Anti – Racist by Ibram X. Kendi

Can We All Be Feminist Edit by June Eric – Udorie

Blind Spot by Max H. Bazerman and Ann E. Tenbrunsel

Thank you all that got involved this month, and all that I absolutely yapped the ear off about this book.

We will return in January with another SSWHub Book Club choice, do look out for polls and announcements on social media.
